Fishing over the past two weeks has been up and down for the fly fishermen and generally good for the conventional gear folks. The fish are here with lots of bill spotted on the surface sunning or in the teasers. Getting a hook up has been a little tough. Barry Quarles, a three time a year regular caught a very nice sail last week along with a 45 pound dorado. Jacks and roosters were also part of the bag. This week Don Vogel’s group of 11 anglers caught roosters, white bonita, a few dorado and jacks. Mike got a day of beach fishing with fellow guide Merry Waugh with one dorado strike and one big rooster. The dorado was a complete surprise, but not a totally unusual occurrence on the beach. Water temperatures are a warm, for this time of year, 74 to 78 degrees. The weather has been very pleasant with highs in the 80’s and light winds in the afternoon.

Hola Amigos, The dorado bite continues down here along with catches of yellow fin, marlin and white bonito offshore. Along the beaches the roosters are crashing sardinas. Can it get better than this? It has been a few years since we have seen this sort of activity in April, not only with the game species but everything that pumps the whole Sea of Cortez. Every one from the Captains and Guides to the dive shop operators are reporting an abundance of mico to mega sized species including krill, small squid, sardinas (a flat iron herring) true sardines, mackerel, humpback whales and mantas. All are indicators of healthy sea conditions. Fly fishing wise Dean Angiola caught eight dorado the other day while fishing on the Valeria. Lots of bills were spotted on the surface, but showed little interest in the teasers. Guide Lance Peterson reported decent catches of dorado and white bonito coming to the fly. The buzz is all about the roosters crashing sardinas on the beaches including good numbers of medium sized fish. Some big roosters have also been spotted, but have proved difficult to catch. The jacks are in April love and not eating, a normal pattern for this time of year. Manuel Castro at Punta Colorada reports good pods of bait in the bay and that the fly fishermen are catching four to eight pound roosters and small jacks. The weather has been very pleasant with calm to light breeze. Today, Saturday, a light wind is blowing in from the North, but did not effect the launching of the fleet. Temperatures here at Punta Colorada have been in the mid to high eighties. This is a great start to the season. Till next week…Mike

This week has seen a tremendous improvement in the fishing on the East Cape. Just as I had hoped for in last weeks report, the fish turned the corner from the Pacific into the Sea of Cortez following the warmer water. The action started with Mike Metzman fishing with Lance on the Splash when they located a dead sea lion floating on the surface. Mike and his sons caught around 30 dorado that day. The following days saw scattered schools of dorado and lots of white bonita. Mid week found Lance fishing off of Cabo Pulmo and finding a great tuna bite under windy conditions. By weeks end the winds were gone and the fleet reported large schools of dorado, scattered tuna, lots of marlin and big roosters along the beach. The season is off to a great start. Water temperatures are in the 72 to 74 degree range with mild days and nights. Just about perfect for this time of year. Luego…Mike

The fishing season is finally upon us and the signs are promising. The north winds seem to be abating about on time followed by a warming of the sea with an abundance of bait. Guide Lance Peterson reports cruising roosters and Jacks along the beaches following big schools of sardinas. The jacks are proving tough, as they usually are this time of year when they can be seen in tight daisy chain formations. Some of the roosters are of the grande size along with the usual juveniles that frequent the Cape in the early season. Sierras are being found along the beaches at first light till about eight in the morning when they move off shore to hunt around the shallow reefs. Offshore the bite is dominated by schools of white bonita, skip jacks and very scattered schools of dorado. Word has it that good numbers of tuna are being caught between the Gordos and the Cape itself. Hopefully they will move into the Sea of Cortez soon. Air temperatures are in the low to mid 80’s while the water temps are in the range of 68 to 74 degrees. That is very encouraging for this time of year. I noted that Terri Fin indicates some very warm water about mid channel in the Sea of Cortez. We shall watch the movement of this very warm pool of water with great interest. The season is on my friends, time to plan a Baja Trip.

Hola Amigos Our fishing season is winding down here on the East Cape. We can feel the north winds brewing, bringing in the fall/winter season. A three day blow earlier in the week upset the bait balance and consequently the fishing. The fantastic rooster fishing that had been consistent all month came to a five day crawl. Fortunately that rooster fish hiatus was short lived and the bite is back on. The Lewis party, fishing on the Mosca Magic, tagged fifteen roosters on Sunday along with a double digit day on dorado. This is the best dorado fishing we have seen in the last three years. The tuna bite is also good, both species can be found close to home. Most days the boats can find both species off Baracas, Cabo Pulmo and los Frailes. We have some decent fisg along the beaches for smaller roosters, lady fish and jacks. Some mornings have been good for sierras as well. The mullet are returning from places up north with some big roosters and jacks close behind. Our beach fishermen had some shots at los grandes, but not hook ups. After the blow the weather has turn pleasantly warm with a cool morning offshore breeze. Water temperatures dropped by a couple of degrees, but are still in the low eighties most places that we stuck a thermometer in the water. The fishing is great, the weather perfect. If you have the time, the time is now. Saludos…Mike

Hola amigos, The fishing conditions remain great for the fly rodders here on the East Cape. This past week we covered 38 fishing days between our guides and our cients caught 265 fish of different species. The top attraction continued to be the roosterfish with 126 caught. Most were in the 4 lb. to 12 lb. range with one very nice one over 20. Our folks also caught 25 yellow fin, 18 dorado, 63 bonita one wahoo and a assortment of triggerfish, pampano, lady fish, jacks, pargo and cabrilla. The roosters were found around la Ribera and the palitos. The dorado were scattered all over, while the tuna were found off Baracas and Cabo Pulmo. We made a couple of trips to the sea mounts short of the Gordos and found lots of tuna. The weather was dry, warm and with out wind till the very end of the week. We experienced north winds of about 12 knots today, but were able to launch and find fish. All is good, so come visit or give us a call...Luego...Mike

The bite is going strong on the east Cape with huge catches fo dorado and tuna. No need to venture very far off shore as the fishing is close in. Eddie Dalmau of Van Wormer Resorts reported on 160 East Cape charter fishing boats from Hotels Palmas de Cortez and Playa del Sol, with a catch including released fish of: 536 dorado, 800 yellowfin tuna, 17 blue marlin, 155 striped marlin, 8 sailfish, 10 roosterfish, 7 wahoo, 18 pargo, 24 bonita, and 14 skipjack. East Cape fishing area weather was in the high-90s, with water temperatures of 78 to 85 degrees. "Lots of bait is available, making for great fishing conditions," Dalmau said. "The tuna and dorado numbers continue to be eye-popping. We have the makings for an October to remember." Van Wormer Resorts' Hotel Punta Colorada was scheduled to reopen for the season in a few days. The beach fishing is good for smaller roosters, pompano and decent sized jacks. Plenty of bait is around to keep the schools of game fish around. Tempratures are normal, running in the low to mid nineties with water temps very consistant in the mid 80's. The fishing is definately on and some of the best in recent years. We are looking forward to a great fall season here on the Cape. Mike

The fishing this past week can only be described as incredible. Tuna and Dorado numbers are by far the best of the year, especially the Dorado catch. Well over 700 of each species were caught by the Van Wormer fleet of boats this past week. On top of that 150 striped marlin were caught and released. The skip jack have put in an appearance in a big way as well. A good part of this can be attributed to an abundant bait supply and warm temperatures that run even through out the southern Sea of Cortez . We have seen some unusual water temperature patterns all season with pools of very cool water mixing along side warm water. Right now the water temps are holding around 84 degrees, which is normal for the season. Along the shore line small to mid sized roosters are busting schools of sardinas along with lady fish and jacks. Air temps are normal for this time of year and are running in the 90’s. If you got the time, this is when you should be down here and enjoying some great fishing. We sure are…Mike

Saludos Henriette has passed with little damage to the hotels or town and the fishing is on. The Bonzai Rod benders just finished their annual trip to the East Cape and had great fishing for tuna, dorado and bilfish. Bud Colucci reported two dorado in the 60 pound class and lots of schoolies in and around debris. The tuan bite continues to be close to shore and off of la Ribera. Ralph Miyata reported an abundance of good sized skipjack with the tuna, providing great light tackle fishing. Good populations of sardinas have move in everywhere along the East Cape beaches providing good opportunities for the fly fishers on roosters, jacks and ladyfish. The weather has been stabel under light winds and temps in the mid nineties for the most part. The forcast for this week is much the same with highs around 88 for the Punta area and 90's as you come around into the Bay of Palms. The water temps fell off after the chubasco, but have recovered into the mid 80', where they should be this time of year. Terra Fin indicates fairly even temps through out the southern Sea of Cortez. The East Cape is experiencing some of the best fishing of the year right now. Hope you have the opportunity to enjoy it. Bent rods for all...Mike

Dorado, tuna, striped marlin and wahoo were the headliners this past week. The striped marlin bite has been described as consistant and excellent. Both tuna and dorado count increased with abundant numbers found off of Cabo Frailes. The la Ribera hump is also producing small tuna early in the morning. Eddie Dalmou of Van Wormer Resorts reported a catch of 26 wahoo this past week. That is very good for the species in and around the East Cape. One of our clients caught 3 wahoo in a single day on the fly about three weeks ago. The rooster bite fell off this past week as experienced by Deacon Brown and his sun fishing out of Punta Colorada. They also caught one striped marlin and some nice dorado on the fly. The beach has been slow with mostly small roosters, a few jacks and lady fish. Weather wise, Dean has departed and we are watching Henrieta. Right now it appears that Henrieta will pass to the south of the point as a tropical storm. The temperatures have been in the low 80's to mid 90's with an increase in the humidity. The heat index has been around the 100 degree mark. Punta Closes on the 1st and we will return the first week in October. Tight lines...Mike

Hola Amigos Good fishing continues to happen down here in Mexico. The schools of small tuna that occupied the drop off in front of Punta Colorada have moved north to Pescadero,Perico and other points north. The dorados have replaced the fiesty footballs to a certain extent and are being found down around Cabo Pulmo and waters off of Baracas. The big story off shore is the marlin bite which includes blues and stripes. The blues are too big for fly gear, but are spectacular when they show up hungry in the teasers. In shore the four to six pound roosters are providing lots of action early and late. Fly casters walking the beach are having a tough time, depending on how close the sardinas work into shore. A plethora of needle fish are proving a challenge to keeping a live teaser in the water for more than about two minutes before being filleted. Temperatures continue mild for August, running high 80's with water temps holding at 83 degrees. The area received a little rain from the spin off of Dean. Times are good, see you on the Baja.

This past week we saw a down turn in in fish numbers for our fly fishing clients. The week started with wind and ended the same way. We saw plenty of roosterfish, but suffered a lower hook rate than we had been experiencing. We fished hard with the Wrays from San Antonio Texas, catching a few roosters each day while enduring lots of last second rejections. In other words typical rooster fish behavior. Chris and Ray had several shots at marlin of the blue kind and well over the capability of fly tackle. The takes were spectacular anyway. Climate wise the temps were high 80's to low 90's with the rh around 80%. Not bad for August. The water temps were fairly even at 83 to 86 degrees. The tuna bite is very close off shore from Punta Colorada. The Marlin are scattered with more blues located about 15 miles off el Faro and Baracas. Other boats were working out side of Cabo Frailes. A few wahoo are still around. Chris Wray did get a strike from a large wahoo on a wireless leader. You can guess the outcome. That it for this week. Hasta luego.

From: Mike Rieser in East Cape

Hola Mosqueros The fishing this past week was fantastic, providing lots of thrills on the fly rod. We hosted a group put together by Mike Copithorn from Napa California. The six angles tallied 64 rooster fish, three marlin, four dorado and two tuna on the fly. Mike caught rooster fish, dorado and a nice striped marlin from a wheel chair, while fishing aboard the Paloma. Mike is one of the most capable anglers that we have hosted here on the Cape and an inspiration to us all. The weather has turned warmer and almost feels like a normal August. Day time temps have pushed 100 degrees, but with livable levels of humidity. The normal south east winds have been coming up around 11:00 and provide natural air conditioning. The water temps were a consistent 82 degrees. That concludes this week report, till next week...Mike

Hola amigos, The fishing has definitely taken off here on the East Cape. The water temps have stabilized around the 82 degree make for inshore and off shore waters. We have a good supply of sardina in all sizes trying to avoid the big predators. We have been hosting the Ponderosa Reunion this past week and the fishing has been excellent for tuna, Roosters, wahoo, marlin and dorado. We fished two boats on Saturday, the clients catching three wahoo, 16 tuna, 1 dorado, 1 striped marlin and 12 roosters, all on the fly. The fly of the day was clearly the purple magic, given the cloud cover. The weather continues on the cool side for this time of year. The past few days however have hit around 100, but not over bearing with humidity. The mornings are cool for August and the evenings delightful. The winds have been light from the southwest. All in all this is a great time to be on the Baja. Till the next report...Saludos; Mike

For three weeks in a row the fishing has been steadily improving. Water temperatures inshore are still below normal for the time of year, running 74 to 78 degrees, while off shore temps are more normal at 82 degrees. Dorado numbers are decent with some really nice bulls being caught. Tuna numbers are strong with a mix of football sized fish for the fly rod and some real bruisers to make the gear guys smile. The first real showintg of blue and black marlin occured this week along with some wahoo and a few sails. In shore the big roosters have turned tough to entice, but plenty of mediums fill the fishing time. Sardinas are still hit and miss, but plenty of bigger baits are avilable for the bait and switch on the fly rod. Air temps are warm and humid as it should be this time of year. The passing of tropical storm Delila riled up the waters for a couple of days, other wise sea conditions have been good. Look us up down at Punta Colorada, we are always happy to provide the latest news on fishing...Mike

Some normality seems to be occuring on the East Cape in terms of the sea temperatures, weather and the fishing. The news is encouraging with warm water moving in, the green water moving out and the long awaited arrival of Dorado. Some very nice bulls were caught this past week mixed with increased numbers of skip jack, and foot ball sized tuna. The later are still 20 or so miles off shore. The marlin bite dropped off for some, improved for others. Other news indicating an over all improvement is reports of lots of dorado around the tip and up into the pacific feeding on schools of sardinas. Fishing the beach was tough for the most resulting in mostly small roosters and jacks. The weather has turned hot with increasing humidity due to the tropical storms that are starting to brew to the south of the Baja. We have a busy August again this year and it looks like the fishing is picking up for the many clients that are headed our way. We are ready.

Water temps started to move up towards the end of this past week. Terra Fin indicates warmer water off the Cape and around the mouth of the Sea of Cortez. Hopefully this mean shorter boat rides to find fish. Tuna are still to be found, albiet hit or miss some days, 20 to 25 miles off shore along with some nice sized dorado. The tuna, for the most part are footballs and perfect for the fly rod. Billfsih continue to be persnickety about eating, though lots of tails are spotted each day. A few more sailfish and Blues are being caught, which is a good sign. Along the beaches some large roosters are crashing mullet and balihoo. Jacks and ladyfish round out the shore action. This is not a sport for the faint of heart. It is hot this itme of year and beach fishing is tough under the Baja sun. Water temps have come up from the low 70's to the upper 70's inshore and are comfortable (fish perspective)82 degrees on the offshore fishing grounds. Air temps are in the 90's with afternoon breezes from the southeast.

The 2007 season continues to baffle us in terms of the weather and the fishing.  We have experienced a significant drop in water temperatures starting the first week in June with some turn around occuring this past week.  We fished several days in heavy fog due to the contrast between the cold and warm water break.  Inshore water temps dropped into the low 70's around mid month, rebounding into the mid to upper 70's this past week.  The colder offshore temps have had an effect on the normal light shore breeze, creating a much stronger onshore flow.  The result is tough conditions along the beach and out in the blue water.  As to the fishing, roosterfish have been the most consistant species since spring.  We have guided folks onto some remarkable specimens of the species, including a 60+ pounder by Dave Koschara fishing with us on the mosca Magic.  In between the grandes, action has been excellent on the mid sized comb tops along with some very impressive jacks.  Author John Gierach, visiting us with Ed Engle, landed a monster jack off shore of Leonero.  The fight started well out in the blue water and ended up right off the beach. I was starting to get concerned about the fly line getting tangled around an anchor chain when the jack finally gave in and allowed us to tail him.  John hooked another big one while fishing from the shore at the light house.

Dorado numbers have been on the low side, with some improvement this past week.  Fishing with the Stilson Party we managed to tease two nice dorado up with a mullet.  The dorado were busting bally hoo along the beach at Chile Patos and would have been reachable with a cast from the beach.  The tuna bite has been very good at time, though usually requiering a long off shore run to find them.  Partner John Matson put Berry Quarles onto a huge school of feeding tuna a few miles off shore of Cabo Pulmo.  Berry released fish till his arms were spent.  Stripped marlin are here in good numbers, finding active feeders has been tough.

So, while the conditions and weather have been challenging, folks are still catching fish on the long rod.  Salt water fly fishing is an evolving sport and we continue to find new ways to catch fish.

The word this past week is big roosterfish. Dave Koschara, fishng on the Mosca Magic caught a 60+ pound rooster around Frailes. We had several hook ups on the fly with others in that size class as well, but came unbuttoned. We caught plenty of smaller roosters at Boca del Salado along with jacks and sierras. The marlin also turned on this past week with more fish on the feed. The dorado remain scarce as are the skippies and bonita. The tuna bite is good some days and off others, although over all numbers are decent for the week. Water temps are in the 78 to 80 degree range with days in the nineties. The first part of the week saw very tranquil seas, with the past two days experiencing stronger afternoon winds from the southeast. Sardinas are not widely available, but lots of mullet make for good teasers baits on the big roosters. Our folks are having fun in the Baja and so shoulod you...Mike

The fishing picked up this week out in the blue water with a nice run of tuna occurring off of Cabo Frailes. The Taylor/Cavanaugh group and the Richard Stewart group were here to capitalize on the bite. The fish were footballs for the most part, but two fifty pounders kept the fly rods bent for over an hour. Most of the fish hit on mosca magics. We found several schools of dorado off Cabo Pulmo and las Baracas and had a marlin strike on yet another mosca magic. The roosters are still concentrated around Boca del Salado and Frailes bay. We did pick up several nice roosters along the beach at Baracus and chased some truly big ones along the beach around the light house, Playa Colorada and Chile Patos. The lady fish have returned in better numbers along the beach along with some nice jacks. Mike Stewart caught a crevel of about 25 pounds with guide Lance Peterson.

The weather remains mild for this time of year, or I am really getting conditioned to running the beaches after roosters. Most days this week started breezy from the south east, only to lay dead flat by mid morning. The breeze tends to return by late afternoon, to die down to flat before sun set. All in all the fishing is getting better to the point of being good. Hasta luego...Mike

The top fish species for fly fishermen right now is still the rooster fish. This past week we fished with Norm Norlander, inventor of the Nor Vice and as always had a great time with Norm and his bride Ruthie. The week started slow, averaging two or three roosters a day, but ended well with a twelve rooster day fishing along the beaches around Boca del Salado. Finding sardines is proving tough around Punta Colorada, but are plentiful south of los Frailes. The inshore catch includes lady fish, pompano, jacks and pargo. Offshore the bite is still inconsistent with rewards to those that are traveling the furthest. Boats leaving out of Palmas de Cortez and Playa del Sol and traveling north are finding good schools of tuna and a few dorado. Marlin are being spotted daily, but are hard to get to bite. The humboldt squid are in and filling the marlin up in deep water. Once the squid move on we should see the hook up rate go back up. The water temps are in the high eighties and deep blue. Cooler, green water has been encountered from the Gordos around to Los Cabos on the Pacific side. Air temps are still mild in the mid 80's. All in all a good time to be in Baja California.

The rooster bite has slowed in terms of quantity, but is improving in quality as more big roosters are being spotted and hooked along the beaches. Our clients have had good shots from the panga and from the shore with several nice ones landed. Guide Lance Peterson reported hooking a very big specimen the other night only to have it come unbuttoned. Big jacks are also making an appearance, with one of the hotel guests landing one of about 40 lb.s on a fly. Other shore line species caught this week were lady fish, croakers, pargo and sierras. The later zipped of a good number of flies.

Off shore the bite was slow during the first part of the week with a great tuna bite out of Palmas de Cortez on Friday. Alice Latta caught a nice dorado and roosterfish on the fly on Friday as well. Hopefully more dorado will follow.

The illegal tuna fleet was at it this past week. Thanks to information of this activity passed to Bobby Vanwormer, the authorities were mobilized and one boat was busted. The others high tailed it out beyond Mexican waters. Hopefully to stay.

The roosterfish bite continued through Thursday of this week with Mike Merrit and Ron Gager boating 20+ roosters a day in the 3 to 5 pound class. The lady fish, sierras and jacks added to the inshore action. Friday and Saturday witnessed a slow down on roosters, though good fishing was had by all.

Offshore the fishing was sporadic for tuna, dorado and stripped marlin. The tuna have been showing about 25 miles straight out from the light house under porpoise. The first boats to hit the schools have been flying flags, the late arrivals to the festivities have had a tough time getting bit.

The weather remains cool for this time of year with temps in the high 70's to low 80's. The winds have been calm in the mornings and picking up to around 6 knots from the S.E. around noon. Water temps have like wise remained consistent at around 74 degrees. The large pool of 80 degree water shown on Terra Fin off shore dissipated over the past few days.

Long time clients Jack and Luann Bremer from Fairbanks are back again as is the large group that comes each year with Dave Shelpuk. All in the season continues to pick up with more times to come. Life is good on the Baja. Hasta luego y que les vayan bien...Mike

Oh the difference a few days can make. Yesterday the winds were calm, seas dead flat, the temps in the mid 80's and a good roosterfish bite was on. Fishing with Kim Levine's party we boated around 25 roosterfish in the 3 to 5 pound range along with lady fish, jacks and shots at los grandes. Off shore the radio chatter was all about a tuna and dorado bite straight out from Rancho Leonero. Boats that went south hit tuna off los Frailes. Lance Peterson called the night before with good report of his clients catching roosters, jacks and big skip jacks. All very good news. We also saw big schools of mullet at Bototes and Chile Patos. Terra Fin infa red may provide the reason, showing 79 to 80 degree water moving in close to shore from the south east. In shore the water temp was showing 75 on our fish finder. Meanwhile the Pacific side is cooling into the upper 60's, pushing the summer pelagics into the Sea of Cortez. Es todo bueno, as we start to see a lot of our old clients returning this month and June. Till the next report...Mike

Here it is almost May and the air temp feels more like the first of April. The climate is delightful, but I have to admit that the fish is still slow when all the species are considered. Even the roosters have thinned out toward the end of this past week. In shore we did see a good increase in big lady fish who have been entertaining our clients on light rods. We have been seeing Lady's of 5 to 6 lbs. which is big enough to put a major bend on an eight weight. The jacks are starting to show some interest in eating a fly, most are in the mid teens in respect to size.

Off shore not much is happening, a few dorado are being caught by boats running thirty miles out looking for porpoise and tuna. On Wednesday the boats found several schools of tuna under porpoise south of los Frailes and lots of white flags were flying off the outriggers by the end of the day. Several boats reported seeing lots of Marlin, though they were tough to get to bite.

As said earlier the air temps are cool for this time of year, running about 78 on average. The wind has been out of the north east at 4 to 6 knots creating a light chop. Water temps are holding around 73 degrees with 76 degree water 20 miles of shore. Untill next week, tight lines...Mike

The fishing picked up this week with lots of roosterfish in all sizes working the beachs between la Ribera and Punta Arena. Bait in the form of sardinas and mullet have also made an appearance along with the game fish. Off shore scattered schools of dorado have been a part of the catch along with striped Marlin. The bite is not hot, but improving over previous conditions. We have been fishing the Dan Urban party the last few days with roostersfish in the morning up to about 16 pounds along with a few jacks, pargo and one halibut. Today, Saterday, the north winds played a surprise visit starting around 10:30 in the morning and blowing into the late afternoon. Water temps have been hanging around 73 degrees, air temps in the low 80's. Untill today a light chop generated by light east winds has come up in the afternoons. The season is off and running, so come down and pay us a visit.

The week started out calm, warm and productive from the fly fishermans perspective. As is sometimes the case this time of year the North winds resurfaced towards the end of the week and blew for three days. Lance Peterson reported good beach fishing for smaller roosters and few larger jacks. Off shore the dorado bite was improving with decent numbers coming from the Cabo Pulmo area. Striped marlin were being found around Cabo Pulmo as well as the Gordos. The first spring run of yellow fin was also under way. The winds have temporarily set things back as can be seen in a drop in the sea surface temps. Last week warmer water had moved in with temps in the 74 degree range. Temps are running closer to 70 degrees now, still favorable for the summer season fish. Other wise the weather is warm, running close to 90 degrees. John arrives today, the 31st, The guide season is headed into full swing, life is good on the Baja.

By all indications the season is turning away from the winter pattern of north winds to a more calm spring pattern. The winds actually blew fron the South East this week for a couple of days, creating a light chop in the afternoon, but setting the stage for the summer season. Water temps are all over the board right now with a range of 66 to 74 degrees. The key to finding fish is finding the thermalcline and the blue/green water color transition. Striped marlin are still available along with a few dorado. This past week a small run of yellow fin showed up about 25 miles straight out from Los Barriles. Yellow tail are also showing up around the southern tip of Ceralvo island.

Inshore a few large jacks are showing some interest in taking flies, though most are still ignoring all offereings. The juvinile rooster fish are still providing most of the fun along the beaches along with lady fish a few sierras, pompino and spot fin croakers. The summer season will soon be upon us. High temps are reaching into the high 80's, warm for this time of year. All in all a good time to visit the Baja.

The winds are starting to die down after a windy winter season and the tempretures have turned pleasantly warm. The boats that are venturing out are finding striped marlin, school sized dorado and a few yellowfin. Water temps are still holding at or above the critical 70 degree mark that supports the summer species. Along the beaches the small roosterfish are eager to bite. The big jack Crevels continue to patrol the beaches and points, but as has been the case for the past several weeks, are proving hard to catch. Lady fish, sierras and a few pompano round out the shore catch. Our fishing season goes into full swing next week when John heads south to start a very busy guide season. We are done traveling to the many sport shows around the West where we enjoyed meeting new folks and visiting with our many great clients and friends, many of whom we will see over the course of the fishing season. Los vemos en la Baja...Mike

This report begins the fishing season for 2007, and we hope that the fishing is as good as 2006. The signs are there that it will be a good year. Tera Fin indicates warm water for this time of year with temps in the 71 to 72 degree range. That is good for early March when the water temps normally dip into the high 60's.

Lance Peterson reports the following:

Wind has been a major factor this week as it usually is this time of year. That being said, I was able to get in some beach fishing early in the week. In some spots schools of big jack crevalle are cruising the beach well within fly casting range. However, they are milling about and daisy-chaining. They are much more interested in each other than chaing flies at this point. Nevertheless, it's good to see some cruising game fish on the beach. Besides the jacks there are lots of small rooterfish around also and they are very eager to bite. In fact, they've foiled some of my best presentations to those spooky jacks by devouring my fly before the jacks even saw it.

Offshore action has been decent for those that make it out. Some boats have done well on marlin. An occasional dorado rounds out the catch.
